George Clooney's black-and-white film is a reconstruction of the dispute between CBS news

commentator Edward Murrow and Senator Joseph McCarthy. Their confrontations took place live on air. In the 1950s, McCarthy headed a Senate committee that investigated citizens suspected of collaborating with communists.

The committee's work was, in fact, tantamount to a witch hunt. Senator McCarthy's campaign during the coldest years of the Cold War can be compared to the political trials in the Eastern Bloc at the same time, although fortunately the penalties in the US were not as severe.

Nevertheless, the unjust accusations destroyed the lives or careers of many people. It was television coverage of these cases that helped to stop the persecution. The film has won five awards at the 2005 Venice International Film Festival, the award for best non-European film at the 2005 European Film Awards, and three Golden Globe nominations in major categories.

Černobílý film George Clooneyho je rekonstrukcí sporu komentátora zpravodajství stanice CBS Edwarda Murrowa se senátorem Josephem McCarthym. Jejich konfrontace se odehrávaly přímo v živém vysílání. McCarthy stál v 50. letech v čele senátního výboru, který vyšetřoval občany podezřelé ze spolupráce s komunisty.

Práce výboru se ve skutečnosti rovnala honu na čarodějnice. Kampaň senátora McCarthyho v nejmrazivějších letech studené války lze přirovnat k politickým procesům ve východním bloku ve stejné době, i když postihy v případě USA nebyly naštěstí tak tvrdé.

Nespravedlivé obvinění přesto zničilo řadě lidí život nebo kariéru. Právě televizní zpravodajství o těchto kauzách pomohlo pronásledování zastavit. Film dosud získal 5 ocenění na MFF v Benátkách 2005, dále cenu pro nejlepší mimoevropský film v při udílení Evropských filmových cen 2005 a má také 3 nominace na Zlatý Glóbus v hlavních kategoriích.
